Privacy
Stays on your phone
- Each reader's name, age and reading rules
- Your check history
- Your Family Pass code, if you have one
- A random ID that identifies this phone to our server (it contains nothing about you)
We never receive your readers' names or ages. Clearing your browser's data for BookNod removes all of it.
Sent to us when you check a book
- The title, ISBN or cover photo you entered or scanned
- Your "anything else to avoid" note, if you wrote one
- Your phone's random ID, and your internet address
We use these to rate the book, to apply daily and hourly limits, and to protect BookNod from abuse. Cover photos are not stored. A book's ratings, together with the title or ISBN and any note, are saved for up to 30 days so the next family to check that book gets an instant answer. Usage counters are kept for up to 2 days and store your internet address only in scrambled (hashed) form. If you have a Family Pass, the random IDs of the phones using it are kept while the pass is active, and for up to about two years after.
Services we use
- Anthropic (Claude) receives the title, cover photo and note to generate ratings. Anthropic's privacy policy
- Open Library receives scanned ISBNs, sent from our server, to look up the book. Internet Archive terms
- Cloudflare hosts BookNod, protects it from attacks, and provides the visit counts described below.
- Cloudflare Turnstile checks that requests come from a person rather than a bot. It works in the background and may collect information about your browser and device to do this. Turnstile is covered by the Cloudflare Turnstile Privacy Addendum.
- Stripe handles Family Pass payments. Stripe collects your email and payment details; we receive only a confirmation that you paid and your subscription status. Stripe's privacy policy
- If you choose to leave a tip, the tip page's provider handles that payment under its own privacy policy.
These providers may process data outside Canada, including in the United States.
Children
BookNod is designed for parents and caregivers. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children. Anything you enter about a child stays on your device.
No ads, no tracking across sites
BookNod shows no ads, uses no advertising trackers, and never sells data. To count visits and check how fast pages load, we use Cloudflare Web Analytics. It sets no cookies, doesn't follow you across websites, and gives us only totals, such as the number of visits, pages viewed, rough location by country and device type, never who you are. Your choices
You can clear your check history in the app, remove readers on the Rules tab, or clear your browser's data to remove everything stored on your phone. To ask about information held on our side, contact us below.
Terms of use
- Ratings are estimates. They are generated automatically from what's known about each book and can be incomplete or wrong. Use them as a quick guide and use your own judgement; BookNod isn't responsible for decisions made based on a rating.
- Fair use. Don't use scripts, bots or automated tools to access BookNod, try to get around its limits or bot check, or interfere with the service. We may block access that does.
- No affiliation. BookNod isn't affiliated with the authors or publishers of the books it rates. Partner editions show a partner's name only with their agreement.
- Changes. BookNod is provided as is. We may change or stop features, and we'll update this page when these terms change.
Billing, cancellation & refunds
- Every phone gets free daily checks. A Family Pass gives unlimited checks on up to 5 phones.
- Plans are billed in Canadian dollars through Stripe, monthly or yearly, and renew automatically until you cancel.
- Cancel any time with Manage or cancel your plan on the Rules tab. You keep unlimited checks until the end of the period you've paid for.
- Payments are non-refundable, except when you were charged in error. If that happens, contact us and we'll refund the charge.
